How it works
We've improved a simple idea to make results more predictable. The unit has two pumps, but only one is needed for trench disposal. The first pump, housed in a 1000-litre well, is controlled by a timer and pumps effluent back to the wet cell's inlet. It passes through a venturi and speece cone to quickly raise Dissolved Oxygen (DO) to nearly saturated levels.
The DO in the inlet of the wet cell ranges from 6-8 mg/L, dropping to 0.3-0.5 mg/L at the outlet, indicating the oxygen is consumed by biota on the 50mm ballast. The system includes 6.5 cubic meters of ballast, providing a large surface area for treatment. In the second cell, water overflows from the first when it reaches a certain height, allowing 12.5L of secondary treated water to flow through, slowing the water velocity and promoting nutrient removal. The treated effluent can be used for subsurface irrigation or above-ground with a chlorinator
Energy Consumption:
0.17 kWh/1000L of Effluent
0.255 kWh/Day
This low energy demand makes the wet cell concept ideal for renewable energy applications, especially solar or home hydro.
(Energy consumption is 10% of most aerated treatment systems.)
